In 2006–07, Ashwin produced a terrific performance in domestic cricket for Tamil Nadu. Initially, Ashwin was not included in the players playing Gyara.

But he was given a chance to play based on his tremendous performance in the Indian T20 League and scored 38 against Sri Lanka in the first match. He was named in India's last 15 players for the 2011 ICC Cricket World Cup.

It was his dream to become an opener but that could not be fulfilled but in his form, the country got an all-rounder player, especially in Test cricket where he scored two centuries against the West Indies.

In early 2017, Ashwin broke Australia's Dennis Lillee record and took 250 wickets in only 45 Test matches to his name. He became the fastest player to make such a record.
